1. What is acupuncture?
The acupuncture treatment itself consists of the insertion of small, sterile needles placed on precise points of the body. These points affect different organs and parts of the brain, which can affect hormones, energy and decrease pain. While the idea of having needles inserted may be off-putting to first-time acupuncture patients, they soon discover that the experience is relatively pain-free and even pleasurable.
2. What should I expect?
When you come in for treatment, we will first review your entire health history before beginning the exam. The physical exam includes a detailed analysis of the pulse, tongue and face. Once a diagnosis has been reached, 1 to 9 needles may be inserted, although this varies depending on the patient.
When all of the needles are placed you will be left to relax in the treatment room for 15-40 minutes. Jeffrey may also recommend dietary and lifestyles changes, and/or prescribe Chinese herbal medicine.
3. How many treatments will I need?
Some patients only need one treatment, while others may need 4-5 before experiencing any results, especially for chronic conditions. A number of factors play a role, including diet and lifestyle, as well as the patient’s active participation in achieving wellness.
4. What do I wear to my appointment? Will I have to remove all of my clothing?
It is best to wear comfortable, loose fitting clothes. During a treatment, we might need to access various parts of your body, usually your arms, legs, abdomen and back. If you are coming from work, we have hangers for your business clothes and we will provide you with a cover during your treatment.
5. Should I eat before or after my acupuncture treatment?
Be sure to eat something during the mealtime prior to your visit. It is very important to have nourishment in your system during an acupuncture treatment. Acupuncture utilizes your body’s energy much like an exercise session would, and if your blood sugar is low, you will not respond as quickly to the acupuncture treatments.
6. How long will I spend at the clinic?
Allow plenty of time for your visit. You will need to spend about 1-1/2 hours at the clinic during your initial visit. This time allows you to complete our initial paperwork, and allows us to ask you many questions, obtain an accurate diagnosis of your condition and give you an acupuncture treatment. Most of your return visits will last about 1 hour. Please let us know if you require a quicker treatment.
7. Are the acupuncture needles used in the treatment safe?
Jeffrey exclusively uses sterile, disposable, single use acupuncture needles.
